Skinnocence™ Standards

Skinnocence is committed to developing products

with integrity using 100% plant – derived ingredients

that meet rigorous natural skincare standards.

Skinnocence products are formulated in accordance with the standards put forth by the
Natural Products Association and it’s natural skincare standards.

NPA seal

While Skinnocence has not applied for certification by the NPA for natural skincare standards, it is our goal to in the coming future.  The cost to certify is often difficult for small businesses.  However, it is paramount to develop our products based on the NPA’s list of Natural Certified Personal Ingredients.
In accordance with NPA standards: Products are formulated using only ingredients found in nature and processed simply to meet a rigorous standard for natural cosmetics. Natural is defined as derived from 95-100% ingredients made from a renewable resource found in nature with no petroleum compounds.  A product labeled ‘natural’ must use biodegradable ingredients and the most environmentally sensitive packaging.
The NPA Natural Standard is based on natural ingredients, safety, responsibility and sustainability.
  • Natural Ingredients: A product labeled “natural” should be made up of only, or at least almost only, natural ingredients and be manufactured with appropriate processes to maintain ingredient purity.
  • Safety: A product labeled “natural” should avoid any ingredient with a suspected human health risk.
  • Responsibility: A product labeled “natural” should use no animal testing in its development.
  • Sustainability: A product labeled “natural” should use biodegradable ingredients and the most environmentally sensitive packaging.
Under the Natural Standard for Personal Care Products, allowed ingredients come from or are made from a renewable resource found in nature (flora, fauna, mineral), with absolutely no petroleum compounds.

Approximately 75-85% of our ingredients are USDA Certified organic meaning 95% free from chemical fertilizers, artificial hormones, antibiotics, GMOs, or synthetic pesticides as well as sustainably farmed. What we cannot provide organically is 100% natural – plant or vegetable based using no harsh chemicals in the processing phase.
Our emulsifier of choice is derived from olives and is a complex combination of fatty acids, Sorbitan Olivate and Cetearyl Olivate – chemically similar to the lipidic composition of the skin surface. It is biodegradable and approved for use as an ingredient in ECOCert Certified Organic products. Emulsifiers are necessary in order to marry oil and water formulas together.  Skinnocence does offer treatments with an emulsifying system.  We know it’s hard to break away from a traditional style lotion or cream, however many of our treatments do not use an emulsifier.  You will quickly realize the difference and it may feel odd at first, but we feel the nutrients and vitamins can be more quickly absorbed without the use of an emulsifying system.
Skinnocence does not bear the USDA organic seal on our products. The cost to be certified is often prohibitive for most small businesses – especially in the early years of business.  Skinnocence sources it’s ingredients – as much as possible – from other herbal and botanical suppliers who are USDA certified and do bear the seal. It is also important to note, that some of our organic oils, botanicals and herbs are sourced from other countries that have their own accredited entities for organic certification and bear different seals of authenticity.  Should you ever have questions or proof of certification, Skinnocence will be happy to disclose that information. You will notice stars used that signal USDA organic when we list our ingredients for each product, however, that does not mean that the other ingredients are not certified organic by another countries standards depending on where it’s made. Many actually are.

Finally-  Skinnocence products are purely made to order ensuring a fresh potion with superior bio-active ingredients.

Anhydrous formulas or products that contain no water – only oils, butters and waxes do not need preservatives. They need antioxidants which most provide on their own, however we still ensure extra protection by using a more powerful blend of antioxidants.  For water-based formulas, we use a very specific blend of safe plant-based preservatives that provide broad spectrum antibacterial, microbial & yeast/mold protection.  Our main preservative is Leucidal SF, a probiotic-based ingredient created by the fermentation of Lactobacillus which is one of the species of microorganisms used to produce fermented products such as sauerkraut and kimchi.  We provide extra protection against yeast and mold using a combination of Lactobacillus (and) Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract (specifically for Lauric Acid) which has powerful natural antifungal activity.  In addition, we include 1% EcoCert Gluconolactone & Sodium Benzoate (NeoDefend) in select products. NeoDefend ingredients are accepted by ECOCERT as preservatives in certified organic cosmetics and consists of a blend of gluconolactone, sodium benzoate and calcium gluconate.  It offers broad spectrum protection in cosmetic and personal care formulations. Some products will have a final component using Elderberry Extract to further protect against oxidation and bacteria.

In general – if you purchased a Skinnocence product, or any cosmetic product for that matter, they should be stored in a dark cool place, away from sunlight and sealed tightly. some of our anhydrous treatments (waterless) we will suggest actually storing in your refrigerator.
